World History
During this week in class we talked colonialism and the conquest of the Europeans. Colonialism is the policy of acquiring full or partial control over another occupying it with settlers and exploiting it economically. In the first wave of colonialism it was located in the North and South Americas. The settlers that came over to the Americas was the Iberians from Spain and Portugual. The second were the British then Russia and lastly France. They perminately displaced the native people that lived in the North and South Americas.
The second wave of colonialism was when settlers started to go to Africa, Asia, and Australia. The settlers that came to those countries was everyone who could. This brought up something that stands out in History and this is called the Scramble for Africa. Scramble for Africa was the occupation, division, and colonization of African territory by Europeans during the years 1881 and 1914. The Europeans came as administrators. The colonies proved markets and resources. They had natural resources but another important resource was human labor.
In class we also touched on the topic of Social Darwinism. This was the theory that in which social order in accounted as the product of natural selection. This is basically saying that it is survival of the fittest and only the strong survive. This also brought up scientific racism. This theory was somewhat in common to Social Darwinism because this was the thought that another race was more superior than another.
Lastly we were also assigned a picture in class to talk about in our "Ways of the World" History book. I worked with another student to discuss this picture which was on page 815. The picture showed my partner and I Afro-Asian family standing together taking a picture. However in this picture they have clothes that stand out to me in particular. I can see that all of the Afro-Asians in the picture have suits on just like a european gentleman. They adapted the customs of the European lifestyle. To some they rejected this lifestyle and wanted togo by their own customs and traditions, however some adapted the european culture just like the people in this picture.
